Navigation Course 2024

Registrations for the navigation course 2024 has closed.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Yacht Club "Syvstjernen" is again this year facilitating navigation courses (duelighedskurser) for Maersk employees and the signup opens.

The course consists of a theoretical and a practical part. By completing both exams, you can choose to take a medical test (vision and hearing) at a maritime doctor's office and subsequently apply at the Danish Maritime Authority (Søfartsstyrelsen) to obtain a Certificate of Competency for recreational sailor (sønæringsbevis for fritidssejlere). This certificate is internationally recognised.

Impotant: Before signing up, please take note of the dates below. Especially exam dates as these are the only dates availble.

The Theoretical Part

The theoretical classes will run on fiveTuesdays and take place at Esplanaden 50 (not possible to join online) from 17:15 to approx. 21:00:

- 5 March
- 12 March
- 19 March
- 2 April
- 9 April

Exams will be on 15 and 16 April where you must be present on one of these two evenings.

The topics that will be covered are:

- Rules at sea (Søvejsreglerne)
- Navigation (Navigation)
- Safety at sea (Søsikkerhed)
- Fire prevention (Forebyggelse af brand)
- Protection of the marine environment (Beskyttelse af havmiljøet)

A maximum of 25 participants per class will be filled on a ‘first come – first served’ basis.

There will be homework required and when signing up we expect that you intend to attend the classes and do the exam.

The Practical Part

Practical training is held throughout the sailing season in continuation of the theoretical part and will be concluded with a practical exam on Saturday 17 August. You will need to be present for a couple of hours this day, and we will set the detailed schedule once the course has started.

You can read more about sailing and other club activities here:

Crew Evenings

Racing

You can sign up to the club activities, including the crew evenings, on a week by week basis once the season starts.

The aim of the practical instruction and training is building your skills within:

- Boat handling
- Man-overboard manoeuvers
- Handling of rope
- Use of safety equipment
- Application of International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea (De Internationale Søvejsregler) etc.

Please note that while the navigation course will take you some of the way, you will not gain enough experience to become a skipper in the club and thereby be able to rent the boats for private use unless you have previous sailing experience. Building enough experience as a beginner normally takes 1½-2 seasons of regular sailing.

How do you sign up?

Participants must be active members of the Yacht Club Syvstjernen to be able to sign up for the course. The membership fee is DKK 900 and covers the entire 2024. You sign up by creating a profile on the website and signing up for the "Yearly Subscription" (not passive) under the "Membership" menu.

Once you have signed up for a membership and paid the membership fee, you will be able to sign up for the navigation course. You can do this under "Activities/Events". The participation fee for the course is DKK 2,700, which covers all material, instruction and examination fees to the Danish Maritime Authority (Søfartsstyrelsen) for both the theoretical and the practical parts.

After the course

Once you have built sufficient practical experience, you can become skipper in the sailing club, which will allow you to skipper club activities and rent the boats for private use. This typically takes a couple of seasons with regular sailing if you do not have any prior sailing experience. A prerequisite to become skipper is that theoretical and practical navigation exams have been passed, but it is not required that you have gotten the Certificate of Competency issued.

If you want to have the Certificate of Competency issued, you first need to book a medical test at a maritime doctor (e.g. Medical Office close to Esplanaden, www.medicaloffice.dk). The fee is DKK 625 which will be paid directly to the doctor's office.

Afterwards you can apply for the certificate with the Danish Maritime Authority (DMA). The fee is DKK 855 and shall be paid directly when applying.
